Events & Programs

Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) is proud to support the City of Maple Ridge in delivering a new, inclusive, and accessible public space.

The City of Maple Ridge has officially completed the development of a new one-acre neighbourhood park at Pazarena Place. The new playground at the park features an inclusive space designed to serve residents of all abilities. This project, led by the City of Maple Ridge, was made possible in part through funding from the 2025 TSBC Community Grant Program.

Prioritizing Accessibility in Public Spaces

At the heart of this new park, the City of Maple Ridge built an inclusive playground that prioritizes accessibility. The space features an accessible swing, an access ramp, and poured-in-place rubber safety surfacing made from 1,532 BC recycled tires. These tires were diverted from landfills through BC’s tire recycling program.

Above all, this program is made possible by a province-wide network of dedicated partners and the active participation of BC residents. Community members contribute to the program by dropping off their used tires at tire retailers or designated Return-to-Retailer (R2R) locations.

From Tire Drop-Off to Playground Surface

First, the haulers collect the tires across BC. Then, Liberty Tire Recycling processes them at their facility in Delta, BC, where they separate the materials into rubber, steel, and fibre. Finally, they responsibly repurpose each component. Recyclers repurpose the steel for use in construction, use the fibre as fuel in cement production, and transform the rubber into a variety of new, innovative products, including the safety surfacing installed at Pazarena Place.

The rubber flooring used in this playground offers a safe, cushioned surface. These qualities reduce the risk of injury from falls. Specifically, it is durable, easy to maintain, and water-resistant. Together, these practical benefits ensure long-term use and safety for children of all ages and abilities.

TSBC is proud to support projects like Pazarena Place. Especially, projects that use BC recycled tires and also create dynamic, inclusive spaces where communities can gather, play, and thrive. Ultimately, this new playground and park will serve local families, children, and individuals with accessibility needs. Above all, it will ensure that everyone in the neighbourhood has access to a welcoming and inclusive outdoor space.
