Events & Programs

A new project in the City of New Westminster has transformed part of the Komagata Maru Perimeter Trail into an inclusive outdoor fitness space. It features poured-in-place rubber surfacing made from BC recycled tires. Supported by the TSBC Community Grant Program, the project brings new opportunities for health, wellness, and community connection.

A Strong Foundation for Health & Wellness

As part of this project, the City of New Westminster installed new fitness equipment along the trail. Each station features poured-in-place rubber surfacing made from 166 BC recycled tires. This durable, non-slip surface enhances safety. It also ensures accessibility for all users, including older adults and individuals with physical disabilities.

The new equipment is strategically placed along the trail, seamlessly linking with the area’s existing trail network. The result is a fitness circuit that encourages more frequent use of the walking trail, which helps residents of the Queensborough neighbourhood stay active and achieve their wellness goals.

By providing a variety of universally accessible equipment, the City of New Westminster has created an inclusive environment that supports participation across generations and abilities.

This project reflects the best of what the TSBC Community Grant Program aims to achieve: local projects that benefit people while giving BC’s recycled tires a valuable second life. What was once 166 scrap tires is now a safe, vibrant fitness space. It will serve the Queensborough community for years to come.

The TSBC Community Grant Program

Since 2009, TSBC has proudly supported over 360 projects across 96 BC communities, awarding more than $6.5 million in grants. Each year, the program invites applications for projects that use BC-made recycled tire products, such as rubber tile surfacing or poured-in-place surfacing. All projects must be fully public and wheelchair accessible.

Eligible applicants include municipalities, registered non-profit community organizations, schools, colleges and universities, First Nations and Métis settlements, and other not-for-profit groups within BC.
