How BC Residents Are Giving Their Old Tires A New Life
Every summer across BC, the Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) ambassador team hits the road. Their goal is simple: to show residents of BC that every tire has a second life waiting to happen right here in the province.
From the bustle of Vancouver’s Khatsahlano Street Party to the roar of the Abbotsford International Airshow, our team spent the summer of 2025 connecting with communities, families, and drivers across the province. We partnered with Liberty Tire Recycling to show how something as ordinary as an old tire can become something extraordinary.

Turning Tires into Something New
Most people know that tires can be recycled, but few realize how much those recycled tires can do. Through TSBC’s tire recycling program, used tires are transformed right here in BC. They become playground surfaces, running tracks, recreational flooring, and even landscaping mulch.

As a result, this creates accessible and durable spaces for children to play, athletes to train, and communities to gather. All of this becomes possible when drivers choose to recycle their old tires responsibly.
A Summer of Connection and Awareness
This year’s ambassador team met nearly 2,500 people in person and reached more than 113,000 residents of BC through events and on-site engagement. With interactive games and tire trivia, the booth turned learning into fun, especially for families. For example, Cornhole, the most popular game at the booth, sparked conversations about where to recycle tires and why it matters.
What Residents of BC Said
A province-wide survey conducted during the program revealed that while over 95% of respondents knew tires could be recycled, many weren’t sure where to take them. The good news? Every tire retailer, mechanic, and service station that sells new tires in BC will take back your old ones for recycling, free of charge.
Participants also expressed appreciation for BC’s tire recycling system, funded by an eco fee included in tire purchases. The system keeps tires out of landfills and gives them a meaningful second life.
Each interaction, each conversation, and each tire recycled adds up to a cleaner, safer, and more circular BC. As TSBC continues to expand its reach and engage more communities each year, the message remains simple: every tire counts.
So next time you replace your tires, remember: that old set of tires could soon become part of your neighbourhood playground or a local running track!
