Oppenheimer Park Playground Renewal Brings Safe, Inclusive Play Space to Downtown Eastside

Events & Programs

The Vancouver Park Board has completed the full renovation of the Oppenheimer Park Playground. This project was made possible in part by the 2023 TSBC Community Grant Program. As part of the upgrade, the playground now features rubber surfacing made from 1,255 recycled tires collected and recycled in BC. As a result, this transformation has turned the play space into a safer, more inclusive, and accessible community environment.

The playground surface is made from 1,255 BC recycled tires.

Located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Oppenheimer Park serves as a vital community hub. In particular, it is known for its social, educational, recreational, and cultural programming. Importantly, the park serves one of the city’s most diverse and underserved neighbourhoods. As an equity-seeking area with limited access to green space and park amenities, Oppenheimer Park plays a critical role in supporting community well-being.

Surfacing for Safety and Accessibility

As part of the renewal, the playground now features over 3,600 square feet of pour-in-place rubber surfacing, designed to improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for children and caregivers. Unlike other options, this surface offers superior cushioning while maintaining a clean and visible play area that meets safety standards for falls and accessibility.

During the playground’s opening, a local resident shared her appreciation for the new surface. Specifically, she emphasized its importance from a parent’s perspective. She noted that being able to see the ground clearly helps reduce the risk of hidden hazards. This is particularly important when compared to mulch, which can often obscure dangerous items.

Key Features That Support All Users

The upgraded playground space supports a wide range of needs and creates a welcoming environment for all visitors. Key features include:

  • A welcoming outdoor classroom and picnic area that supports learning, rest, and social interaction
  • A safe, easily monitored play area
  • Durable and engaging play equipment that fosters exploration and movement
  • Unique play elements designed to reflect the local community and encourage cooperative play among children of all ages and abilities

Designed for Inclusive Interaction

The renovated playground is fully accessible, with play spaces and amenities thoughtfully designed for people of all ages and abilities. In addition, from gently sloping pathways to inclusive equipment, the entire area invites connection and interaction. What’s more, the layout encourages caregivers and parents to engage with their children in play, helping to foster stronger bonds and shared experiences.
