4 Innovative Products Made in BC from Recycled Tire Rubber

Partner Highlights

These BC-based businesses are transforming the rubber from old tires into new, high-quality products, reducing waste and supporting the circular economy.

When you recycle your old tires in BC, you’re helping turn waste into new, innovative, locally-made products. It’s a simple action that supports sustainability and fuels a circular economy right here at home.

What happens to your tires?

You can return your old tires when you buy new ones, or drop off your unwanted tires at a return-to-retail location in your area free of charge. Once they are dropped off, your tires are collected and transported to Liberty Tire in Delta, BC. There, the tires are processed into landscaping mulch and crumb rubber–a material used to make locally-manufactured products.

Many recycled tires are used to create safe, durable playground surfaces like this one in Steveston, BC. Through our TSBC Community Grant Program, we provide financial support to community improvement projects across the province. But beyond these projects, your recycled tires are also used to create local products that you can buy as a consumer. Here are just some of the local businesses that create products from recycled tires.

Rubber stall mats

Red Barn® (a brand by North West Rubber) produces heavy duty rubber stall mats–high-quality mats that provide a slip-resistant surface and cushioned comfort for large farm animals. The rubber mats are easy to clean, versatile, protective, and anti-fatigue, ideal for dry environments such as equine trailers, barn alleyways, workshops and ventilated exercise areas.

Rubber mulch

Manufactured by Liberty Tire, rubber mulch is used for gardens and landscaping. Rubber mulch lasts 10 times longer than wood mulch on average, and stays in place better than wood mulch due to its heavier weight. Recycled rubber mulch doesn’t retain moisture, ensuring water reaches plant roots efficiently. And unlike wood mulch, it won’t attract damaging pests like termites or carpenter ants. Its low-maintenance benefits, especially its ability to suppress weeds and insulate soil from extreme temperatures, make recycled rubber a popular choice.

Where to buy it: Home Depot, Home Hardware, RONA

Truck bed mats

Red Barn manufactures heavy duty truck bed mats using recycled rubber. The durable, non-slip surface is great for protecting your truck bed from scratches, dents, and cargo damage. The etched texture keeps heavy loads in place, preventing shifting that can otherwise damage your truck bed and sidewalls.
