2,114 Recycled BC Tires Used in the Transformation of Lobley Park
Located in the heart of Metrotown Town Centre, one of Burnaby’s most densely populated areas, the Lobley Park playground has been transformed with the support of the TSBC Community Grant Program. In particular, this project utilized recycled BC tires in its renovation.
This initiative, led by the City of Burnaby’s Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department, replaced the outdated and inaccessible playground with inclusive play structures and new rubber surfacing. The project installed durable pour-in-place rubber surfacing made of 2,114 recycled BC tires, which replaced the old engineered wood fiber ground cover. Notably, the new rubber surfacing offers numerous benefits for playgrounds. It enhances safety with its cushioned, seamless surface, reducing the risk of injury from falls. Additionally, it is wheelchair-friendly, providing easy access for people of all abilities and making the playground more inclusive. The surface is also durable and weather-resistant, requiring minimal maintenance. Furthermore, it allows for quick drainage after rain.

The enhanced playground primarily serves families with children aged 2-12. In addition, it offers a fully accessible and easy-to-navigate space for all. Moreover, the soft, rubberized fall surface adds safety, especially for young children. This surface also significantly improves access for strollers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. Consequently, the playground’s focus on inclusivity ensures that it benefits not only local residents but also visitors from surrounding neighborhoods. On top of that, Metrotown and Royal Oak SkyTrain stations are just a short walk away.
In the past five years, several new high-rise buildings have been constructed around Lobley Park. As a result, this revamped playground now serves as a key recreational space for families in the area.
